I am rather
in a state of loss
as to how to arrange
for my passages to Hongkong
by the Steam
of the State
for the year now
drawing to a close.
I have the honour to
inform you that I
have been instructed to return
to Hongkong by the
8th September,
and I was given to understand
that my appointment
was subject to your approval.
I have to inform you with regard
to my reappointment on
the Canton Railway
in the Colony
of Hongkong.
On leaving London
on the 12th instant,
I came on to Hongkong
on the 20th ult.
and I have booked
my passage
with accommodation
on the steamer.
I should be much obliged
if you could favour me
with an early reply
as to whether my appointment
has been confirmed,
as I am on duty
in the Colony.
To the Right Honourable
The Secretary of State
for the Colonies.
